Current situation:

    • When registering students who want to join a class outing, we write their names down on a piece of paper. Or, we print the names of all the students in the class on paper at the beginning of an academic year, and use it for all kinds of activity registration for the class. Every class requires a different name list. Each club in the school needs its own list. Whenever a student joins or leaves, we print another set of name list.

    • When registering employees who wish to participate in a company dinner, especially in an environment where most people do not have email access at work, we count how many are interested, or get them to write their names down on paper. Recording who are vegetarians, who needs halal food, and who does not want beef, is troublesome and error-prone.

    • At the entrance of an office building, a school, or a hospital ward, we retain an identification document of a visitor, and write the particulars of the person in a logbook. We do not know whether or not the identification document is genuine or fake, because most security staff may not know how to check. Worse, the logbook is hard to read and is almost certain to contain lots of errors, which we treat as correct because there is no way to verify. Some install a desktop and run an application to do the registration. But such a gigantic device is problematic, especially in a remote security post. It may vanish in the middle of the night, besides requiring adequate cooling facilities. A notebook is not very much better either, as carrying a 2 kg bag to a washroom or back home at the end of a shift is not that convenient.

With SaveKad:

    • To register students interested in joining a class outing, we simply take out a smartphone or tablet, connect a reader, launch the SaveKad Android application, then insert MyKad of each of the students. Remember to tap the Save button on the screen for each MyKad though. If it is a club outing, we can also write the class code in a Remark field on the screen.

    • To register employees who want to participate in a company dinner, with the SaveKad Android application running on a smartphone or tablet, we insert MyKad of each of them into the reader, write down their preferences in a Remark field, and tap the Save button.

    • After the registration completes, we tap the Export button to put all the collected names and remarks in a csv file. Then we copy the csv file to a desktop or notebook, and open it in a spreadsheet application. With the collected data properly placed automatically in rows and columns of a spreadsheet, we can do whatever remaining that is necessary for the activity.

    • To register a visitor, we simply insert his or her MyKad in the reader, tap Read followed by the Save button. Then it is done. The collected name, address and time are virtually guaranteed to be accurate. If we also want to record the time the visitor leaves, just get his or her MyKad again, and do the same Read and Save. Just that we need to use a Remark field on the screen to indicate the visitor is leaving. We can Export the saved data and copy it to a USB thumb drive for backup purposes. The data, exported in both SQLite and csv formats, is easy to reference and search in the future with appropriate applications. Many such applications are available free of charge on the web.

Possible usage:

Student registration for class activity

    1. Turn on a smartphone or tablet. Connect the reader to it. Then launch the SaveKad Android application.

    2. For each interested student, insert his or her MyKad into the reader, then Read and Save.

    3. Finally, Export the saved data to a csv file, and open the file in a spreadsheet application for any necessary processing.

Employee registration for company event

    1. Turn on a smartphone or tablet. Connect the reader to it. Then launch the SaveKad Android application.

    2. For each employee who wishes to participate, insert his or her MyKad into the reader, tap Read, then enter whatever extra information in the Remark fields. After these, tap Save.

    3. Eventually, Export the saved data to a csv file, and open the file in a spreadsheet application for any additional processing.

Visitor registration at building entrance

    1. Turn on a smartphone or a tablet. Connect the reader to it. Then launch the SaveKad Android application. The application probably has to be kept running during the entire shift.

    2. Whenever a visitor enters the building, get his or her MyKad, insert it into the reader, tap Read. If necessary, enter the purpose in a Remark field. After these, tap Save.

    3. If necessary, when the visitor leaves, also get his or her MyKad, insert it into the reader, tap Read, indicate in a Remark field that he or she is leaving, and then Save.

    4. Once a day or a week, Export the saved data to files, and back-up the files in an external USB thumb drive.

Traffic police road-block

    1. Turn on a smartphone or a tablet. Connect the reader to it. Then launch the SaveKad Android application.

    2. Get MyKad of a potential traffic offender. Insert it into the reader, tap Read, then tap + to see the driving license.

    3. If the person needs to be booked, enter the offence and location etc in the Remark fields, then tap Save.

    4. After returning to the station, Export the saved data to a csv. If the traffic police department is kind enough to provide an application that can import the csv file to the offence recording system, it will be good. Otherwise, just open the file using an appropriate application, which may be a spreadsheet or a csv file viewer, and copy the name, address, and license details etc item by item to the system. Whether this should be done by hand, or by copy-and-paste, is up to the personnel.
